Dam Market History

Built around 1908, this market was called “Đầm” or “Cửa” because it used to be a 7 hectare pond, which was a way through Cai river outlet.

Because of its long existence, Dam market has become a part of the way of life for local Nha Trang people. Each morning Cho Dam comes alive with farmers and fisherman bring their fresh catch and produce to market. Cho Dam Market was officially redesignused in 1974 after the Vietnam War. The market is about 5.270 square meters and can hold up to 3,000 people at a time. A fire in 1975 slow down the growth of Cho Dam and the area eventualy became a department store in the 1980s.

Today tourist visiting Nha Trang always stop by Cho Dam market. Most do not buy anything, but they cannot help taking pictures of the market and enjoying a good morning walk through the market. Typical products sold at Cho Dam Market are different types of dry sea food. The market is also open early morning each day around 4 am to meet the demand of local people and tourists doing their morning shopping.

Nha Trang has changed a lot from the past and has become a beautiful city near the South China Sea. Visiting Nha Trang nowadays consist of famous sites such as Cham Ponagar Temple, Hon Chong Promontory and Long Son Pagoda. Located in the center of Nha Trang City, the market is lively and vibrant with merchants selling varies merchandises. Dam Market main buiding is a circular three-story building. The middle area consist of many local souvenir shops. Outside the main building is teemed with cap, hat and clothing shops. Behind the Cho Dam is where the fresh fish and meat market is located.

Cho Dam Market has over a total of 1,500 households goods for sale. Kiosks, goods stalls, stores, sideboards and vehicles are just some products you will find at this vibrant market.

The Cho Dam (central market) close to Nguyen Hong Son street is goog place to wander and browse and it is quiet well-sticked with useful items. In the vincinityof the market, along Phan Boi Chau street, for example, are some bustling streets with old colonial-style shuttered houses.
